Why MySpace and Facebook? (a question about online social networking)?

Do you have an account on an Online Social Networking Website (i.e. MySpace, Facebook, Xanga, etc.) if so, W-H-Y? What are the advantages/disadvantages?

Why MySpace and Facebook? (a question about online social networking)?
MySpace - photo comments

Friendster - main purpose is to add more friends.

Facebook - to keep in touch with 'real' friends

Hi5 - similar copy of friendster with different name.

Xanga - featured profile of getting to know a person deeper.

Bebo - Similar to hi5 and friendster

Multiply - to communicate by sharing photos with friends

Yahoo! 360- Something like Xanga

DeviantArt - for art lovers where great pictures are posted and commented.
Reply:I do not have MySpace but I have Facebook.

I think that with either, you have to be careful. A bit more careful than writing emails, but a bit less careful than buying things online. it all comes down to how much information you are willing to share with people. The more information you share with friends, the more info that "others" can see also. That's the case with anything, just like Facebook and MySpace.

However, it appears that Facebook has a better way of hiding info from those that are not your friends. I have clicked on people's MySpace profiles and I dont even have a MySpace account! In Facebook, you have to LOG IN FIRST. Then, they can still decide not to let you see their profile if they choose to.

The benefits? It's the lazy man's way of keeping in touch with people you know casually and wouldnt otherwise call or email. You can see up to date pics of them, if they choose to share them. You can see a phone number change, and email address change, their current occupation, their other friends, etc. without even having to request it from them or them having to send out a broadcast email to all their friends.

Also, you can get back in touch with people you haven't seen in years! Which is what I have done so easily through Facebook, considering I have lived in 5 diff states and 2 diff countries!

It's good to take the pros from it and stay away from the cons. Be smart and safe, and you'll enjoy it!
Reply:I have a myspace account. Through myspace, I was able to connect with several people I had lost touch with. See, I grew up and went to school in Indiana, and moved to Mississippi after high school. No real disadvantages that I have encountered. My stepdad got a computer virus from myspace though... You just have to be smart and be careful. Only communicate with people that you know personally, or it can get out of control.
Reply:myspace and xanga don't appear too safe..so no to that..

but facebook is pretty decent..and its a good way to keep in touch with people you don't see regularly.

you have to ofcourse be careful.

but for me, i've gotten in touch with people from elementary school again and so thats pretty cool.
Reply:I hardly use my facebook, and I use Myspace a few times a week to add new photos, and chat with friends
Reply:Put simply, as stupid as they may seem, they are sometimes the only way to keep in touch with friends. Mostly, I use them as ways to keep in touch with friends in college. One of my friends is a friend in Virginia who ONLY has a Myspace and only replies to it, which is frustrating, but I love my friends.

And I am careful online, so I don't add people left and rights. My online areas are friends only for a reason.

What programming languages are needed to create a social networking site such as MySpace, Friendster, Facebook

I've often wondered how these things work, the most advanced my website knowledge is a basic understanding of HTML and CSS, what goes into making a social networking site and what kind of programming languages are used?

What programming languages are needed to create a social networking site such as MySpace, Friendster, Facebook
Sites like this use a programming language that can interact with a server which probably stores content in a database.

I personally use PHP and MYSQL but there are other server-side languages too such as ASP.Net

Before you start you need to make sure that your web space is able to parse a programming language else it will be a complete waste of your time. Other than that there are plenty of places that offer cheap hosting if you want to have a dabble.

You will find that learning a programming language will open up your web-designing to a whole new level!

Try a search like PHP 101 for some basic tutorials.
Reply:the basic structure of such web pages is all the same: they have a big database, and a server-side program which gets the input from your browser, processes it, and returns an HTML file to your browser, which is then displayed.

On the server side, you can basically use any programming language for this. php is very popular for small or medium sized web pages. Java is also very popular for medium sized or big web pages. I know that amazon is built from hundreds of different modules written in different programming languages.
Reply:You can use readymade software for making a community based website.

Here are the best free option for you, www.boonex.com/products/dolphin/

I hope this'll help you.

Alternatively you may contact a web designer to set it up for you. Check websites like http://oktutorial.com/
Reply:for that you need to use ASP.net, AJAX, JSP etc.
Reply:A server side scripting language like PHP, coldfusion, ASP.NET to act as the middleman between the database and website, interact and make changes to the database.

A Database Management System (DBMS) such as MySQL, Oracle, Microsoft Access to manage the database, which will store the registered user info such as address, email, phone number etc etc.

Can one use other companies chat logo on social networking website?

On a social networking website, is it legally okay to use the chat icons of major chat applications like Yahoo, Google, AIM, MSN or ICQ, lets say, on the user profile page to display the user IM contact information?

Can one use other companies chat logo on social networking website?
You better not! otherwise you'll be landing into some serious legal issues.

All logos and trademarks are copyright, and you cannot, in any way or medium, reproduce them for your own use.

Pedafiles, serial killers, and other people are often found on these sites, and according to the news ALL of them have them on it, so people are scared out of their minds about being raped and murdered.

Why do filipinos go online and join social networking sites?

Hi everyone! im having a thesis about social networking in the Philippines. Your answers will be a big help. Thanks!

Why do filipinos go online and join social networking sites?
Becuase they want a Green Card from the US. Every single one of them i talked too told me thats what htey wanted...
Reply:A friend of mine in the U.S. actually got 'involved' with several different filipino ladies online. He asked them all this same question. Many of the women were looking for a way out of the Phillipines, hoping to come to the U.S. where many of their friends have gone--that and the men in their lives were basically lazy and insisted on the women doing all the work to support them...at least that was the overall consensus. Right or wrong here, it makes sense. Filipino women are very beautiful and very loyal. This truly appeals to U.S. men as many here are fed up with women here who have all but lost the ability to give to a relationship. All U.S. women seem to want is to know what they can GET. So you have a 2 way street here. U.S. men like what the filipino women are offering and the filipino women like the idea of having a loving, stable relationship in the U.S.
Reply:to meet people.

Reply:Chops, speak for your own mother, all US women are not greedy and only what, what, want. it is true, women from the Philippines are looking for a way to get into the USA, so i would say that women on those kinds of dating networks, sites, are preying on men who are maybe a bit naive and vulnerable and lets face it, unattractive. I mean put yourself in there shoes, if u wanted out of someplace so bad, and one of the only ways to get out was to kiss butt to some fat Joe sitting behind a PC? It is deffo a 2 way street here.

Also it is not only Philippine women that do this. I have heard about Russian polish and some people in africa trying the same thing.

Just go up to her and say hi, whats your name? Nice to meet you *name* I'm blah blah but you can call me blah. Then start having a conversation. I guess you can start by talking about the weather and such.

Does anyone know of any open source social networking software? (something like facebook.com)?

I'm part of an organization that has had many members over the years and I'm looking for a way to set up a website that will allow all members to create profiles, upload photos, etc. and immediately link up with one another. Something similar to social networking websites but this one allows everyone to automatically connect with one another since it will be limited to members of the organization.

Does anyone know of any open source social networking software? (something like facebook.com)?
What about one of these?

Reply:I'm not aware of anything that is created for redistribution. The size and complexity of such a site would suggest that finding a canned package to do this is unlikely. We're talking a lot of resources to run a package like that in it's purest form. If you wanted to build a framework and offer up cookie cutter pages, you could do that rather easily with Apache, MySQL and PHP pages.

How do I get funding for my Social Networking Website|?

I am starting a website it is a social networking type site it is geared to a specific group of people, ( So i'm not trying to be the next facebook) I am looking for someone to invest, because I believe i have some very unique ideas that can generate alot of money from the website. How can I find someone to invest%26gt; where do I look? Who do I speak to, and really who is going to be willing to give me their money?

Thanks

I think they call those facilities... ... banks
Reply:Sell ad space on the site. You said it's geared to a very specific group? Well then concentrate on companies that sell to that group. For example, if your website is geared toward elderly people, go for healthcare related companies. And direct your inquiry to someone in the marketing dept, or the internet marketing dept.

Does anyone think Ebay would benefit from social networking ?

Apparently there are plans to introduce a social networking element to Ebay. Does anyone think this would be a good idea ?

Personally I use Ebay to buy and sell and think that this may be detrimental to the sitre as a whole,

Your thoughts ?

Does anyone think Ebay would benefit from social networking ?
There's more than enough Social Networking sites as it is so I think this would be an unnessecary thing to have on ebay. It is a buying %26amp; selling site after all.
Reply:I can see why they would introduce it (it would largely benefit sellers and buyers alike) however I think eBay is fine just the way it is. I mean you don't really need to meet up with people and find out what they're selling - they already have a perfectly good search button for that.
Reply:I mean this isnt an online social community. I feel that if they add this feature it wont boost sells, or marketing. Ebay is fine just the way it is. Buying and selling wont benefit from social networking. It will be a total waste of time, and money.
Reply:I agree; I like to maintain a degree of anonymity online.

How do you start a young, black, professional, social networking organization? How do you setup the foundation

I have intelligent single professionals interested in starting a social group. What should be expressed in writing for the foundation to get started? Should we have a mission statement? Should we have Marketing Plans, Bylaws, etc. Are their any websites in existance that could help with the development of this Social Group. The main purpose would encompass self development,(financial and career development) travel for networking purpose, (like essence festivial or black ski weekend) and adult gatherings from ages 25-40. If you could give me some suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Can you put a price on Social Networking?

I was wondering with this country and world now communicating and depending on the internet and social networking websites like Facebook and Myspace to communicate with friends and family would we start paying to use the services and how much will we pay. I know for a fact that Americans will pay to take surveys and post bulletins and try to get the most friends but the question I am asking will you pay and how much will you pay?

Can you put a price on Social Networking?
Most of these websites are monetized via targeted ads.

Some, like linkedin.com and ryze.net have tiered memberships, with basic functions for free and advanced functions at a price, which can be justified by their business-value.

I think the fastest way to kill a general social networking website is to begin charging members.

Can yahoo answers be used for social networking?

But alas, this is not a site for social networking folks. It was designed for questions and answers alone.

Y! Answers: Source of Information, or Social Networking Website?

Sure, there are many questions to be answered with this service... But with more questions coming up with topics like "Your Favorite Book" or "Favorite Movie", will this service actually become a good source of information, or just another opininated Social Networking website?

Y! Answers: Source of Information, or Social Networking Website?
It should be useful for both - some people will ask for opinions, others will ask for solid answers. It can serve both purposes.
Reply:I think they should have two sections one for the social networking and one for everything else, the actual Q%26amp;A section. That way people could go where they want and do what they want. But the questions should be divided up into categories as well and what (new) format that should take, I don't know.

But as it is I think it is a good source for both.

How do I start up a social networking website such as MySpace?

I've seen websites which you can set up but they are usually for individual websites to advertise your business or yourself etc. but how would I go about setting up a social networking website? Or is this possible through those normal web design ones?

How do I start up a social networking website such as MySpace?
Some knowledge of a scripting language is essential (ASP/PHP and an SQL database would be standard fare), and a dedicated server would be needed for a really popular one. If you want to provide extra features, the ability to create flash/java applets and some knowledge of graphic design would also be very helpful.

However, if you want to get it off the ground, the most important thing for such a site is not its construction - you can get many awesome looking but dead examples of this by flicking through Google - but the availability of a good network of contacts to get it off to a good start.
Reply:Hi. If you plan to start a social networking website you should also think at a budget if you don't have the knowledge, skills and time to develop one.

For making your dream alive you can:

- build a script (recommended but expensive solution) using a good programming team

- use a solution available on market :

. phpfox at http://www.phpfox.com - price 300 $

. Handshakes at http://www.dzoic.com - price: 349 $

. E-Friends at http://www.phpfox.com - price: 280 $

. Buddy Zone at http://www.vastal.com - price: 280 $

. AROUNDMe at http://www.barnraiser.org - price FREE

. PHPizabi at ww2.phpizabi.net - price FREE

there are more and I cannot recommend one because I haven't used them yet, a deeper research is needed in order to choose one.

then you will need a hosting server and a web designer to install the script and redesign (to obtain a branded version for your scripts)

To keep the costs low you can go to a freelance website where you'll find a lot of programmers ready to work for you (elance.com, freelancers.com, getafreelancer.com...). I have to warn you that not all the freelancers are good and dedicated to their work.

Also you can give me an e-mail and I can help ;)

Why is Friendster the most common social networking site in the Phils.?

I just noticed that most of my friends in school have a Friendster. It's like Friendster is the only social networking site they know! Their are other sites like Tagged, Bebo, MySpace, Facebook, Hi5 and many more but it seems like they only know Friendster! I'm getting sick of it.

Why is Friendster the most common social networking site in the Phils.?
idk i think Phillipines is the Friendster Capital of the world. and few people have Facebook and Vibe maybe because some people are not aware of it, or they prefer Friendster all the way.lol

Facebook uses PHP and MySQL i believe, Yahoo uses PHP now too...

I built a social network using Php and MySql as well, it takes more than a product to make a business however. You need a team of people with the same goals, you need good systems etc.

How do i set up a social networking site?

After hearing the news on facebook i wanted to set up my own social networking site. How is this possible?

How do i set up a social networking site?
You have to know something about computers, it takes programming skills and will need more than one person if you want to try and compete with facebook.
Reply:It depends and what you want to achieve. If you want a small, local social site or one serving a niche market that maybe will not grow too big, then you could use a CMS with some extra components (Joomla can do this well for example).

If you are aiming for a rival to Facebook/Bebo etc, then you need a team of developers, a HUGE marketing budget (you have a lot of catching up to do) and a book on web 2.0 :)

What would you add to a Social Networking website like MySpace or Friendster to make it better?

I programmed a website called "FriendHaven.com" to compete with that of MySpace and Friendster. If you could add any new features or something different that you would like to see on a Social Networking website, what would you add or change to make it cooler for you.

What would you add to a Social Networking website like MySpace or Friendster to make it better?
this is becoming an exhausted market, so i wish you well. ill try to help.

How about having a relationship section where people can ask questions. It is similar to forums, but more of a Q%26amp;A feature like this Yahoo Answers. But just stick to one or two sections like relationships and friends. because people have lots of questions, but they dont know who to ask. thats why they come to such websites as Yahoo Answers. And forums are a bit different, this format works much better and is far more interesting.

How about when you click on a person you see what they like, their interests, hobbies, ect... now have a button where people can click to find similar people. (this probably exists). but also have a button which finds people that are opposite of this person. opposite interests, ect... this could be fun for people because they would never have thought to find such a different person.

also in order to have people come back everyday you should put some limits. Like if they are able to upload a certain amount of pictures.

Make it a competition of some sorts: if they have a certain amount of friends or if they have been on the website for a certain amount of time they get prizes: like the ability to add couple more pictures, and the top winner(s) could be like the featured person(s) of the day or of the week.

.

A feature allowing people to talk to each other. Or use a webcam.

I dont know if you'll have enough space or memory, but allow users to add more than one video. Video profiles. instead of having boring writing as their profile let people post a video of themselves saying what they like.

i myself have never used any of these myspace such websites, but these are just some ideas you could use. hope it helps. ill try to think of more for you. let me know if you need more ideas. tedmando35@yahoo.com

Why do people use career-oriented social networking sites?

There are many social networking sites in the market which allow you to keep up to date with the education and careers of your friends and contacts.

In your experience, why do you or others use these sites?

Why do people use career-oriented social networking sites?
To me, as much to the people I know of, career-oriented social networking sites have ushered better work opportunities, multi-perspective understanding and like-minded friends.

Professional contacts have always been instrumental in bringing career growth prospectives. If I or any of my friends feel confident about anybody else's professional capabilities, we recommend job openings in companies we know of. Also, such sites promote awareness of the courses that can help us perform better in our jobs.

Each one of us knows a little more about certain subject than everybody else, and it is this difference that can help us access the complete picture of perception. This is what I mean when I mention "multi-perspective" understanding.

And one of my close friends is somebody who does not even live in the country where I do. I got to know her through one social networking site, and we have visited each other once with our families across disparate continents.
Reply:Because they like to meet people of similar age or interest.
Reply:A network of folks all have something in common: careers. Many are experienced former execs, doctors, nurses and lay-people. A career-minded network is kinda like living on campus while going to college: it enhances the academic environment resulting in a more focused and prepared job seeker. These groups usually meet and may have employers visit for discussions.
Reply:because they are affraid meeting poeple outside in real world. they feel more secure at homes. they dont have to look in the eyes of other opeople, no one will see their body language and thus they can pretend to be anything they want.
Reply:Because a lot of people feel like social sites that aren't career oriented are too trashy with irrelevant or fake stuff. That's the reason some people choose facebook over myspace. I prefer myspace because of it's emphasis on music which I'm interested in and prefer my career networking via email or in person.
Reply:heeheehee!!!!!!
Reply:job is important in peoples life. Its better to get more connection among the employees as well as unemployed, though they can find out more job opportunities as well as some other solution like starting a new small business to earn bucks.
Reply:To keep track of my friends even if I am at home all the time.
Reply:Well it's the old adage - it's not what you know, it's who you know. If you see a job advertised and happen to know someone who works in the company then you're not just another face in the crowd.

My social networking contacts include people who I used to know that are now living all over the world. Just think of the possibilities that this opens up. You wouldn't normally talk to them but just keeping in touch that little bit via the good old world wide web means you never know when they could come in handy.

I'd be happy to help an old friend who was looking for work if I was able to and knew they were trustworthy.
Reply:no.. they dnt..

Orkut is nt career oriented...but I dnt like it...

It given u complex abt profession.. u become jealous of others etc..
Reply:My company uses them to generate sales leads.
Reply:I think it is a way to keep in touch with your long lost friends in the comfort and convenience of your own home.
Reply:I think that social networking sites encourage the right behavior - using your personal network to learn new things. Career oriented sites work in much the same way, however, the networks built through these may prove even more beneficial in the long run.

These sites are really good for shy types who really are interested in learning more about an industry or job.
Reply:You know this is a ridiculous questions so aptly asked by an online recruitment company!!!!! Please seek - if you want me to use your service give me a better question! Like say, would you like to have your photo included with your resume when applying for jobs on seek?
Reply:For the same reason you use this site. Belonging to a community of your peers with the ability to express your thoughts and feelings.
Reply:i dont because they want to i guess or maybe its there hobby
Reply:Everyone is so busy and are moving further away as we get older - it's just become easier to keep in touch with all my friends through websites.
Reply:On the one hand, it is to have proximity to people of like minds, backgrounds and aspirations.

On the other hand, it is to position oneself for better opportunities.
Reply:simple.... to see if you have done better then your friends. Same thing for your friends, if you have a profile somewhere. Its all about doing, one better then everyone else. I think the whole concept was good, if your looking for a job and EVERY ONE checks the internet...but it just got really, really pointless; really, really fast!
Reply:Well it's the old adage - it's not what you know, it's who you know. If you see a job advertised and happen to know someone who works in the company then you're not just another face in the crowd.

Reply:People with the same career often find common grounds. it is actually fun to socialize with the people who work in the same field.
Reply:Because they are lazy talentless people who'd rather suck up and kiss *** than do a decent days work? I mean, heck, that's why I do it.
Reply:Because, nobody wants to be alone...

What do people think of a social networking website for Kiwis?

Is it a good idea for New Zealand to have its own social networking website such as http://www.kiwipulse.co.nz ?

What do people think of a social networking website for Kiwis?
Hey,

This is a great idea! This year will see a huge growth in niche social networks focused on particular interests, careers and locations. Sites like these enable people to find like-minded communites and receive genuine friendship and support.

Just imagine how many kiwis are spread across the world and would like to connect and stay in touch with friends and family?

There's a search engine that allows users to find niche social networks. It's called findasocialnetwork.com. I think you can submit your own social network for a free listing and let other kiwis find it and join. Check it out!
Reply:Probably a good idea. Though feel free to join Seniorocity as well, I noticed several Aussies there but no Kiwis.

Help - where to find online community/social networking?

I am trying to do some preliminary research on online communities/social networking groups. I need to find out (with specific examples) what the membership numbers look like. You know, who signs up, who's active and how many pay for membership. Any ideas on where to find this kind of info?

Anyone know any good online family social networking sites to manage busy schedules?

Anyone know any good family social networking sites that allows me to share calendars, to-do lists, reminders etc. Basically I am looking for a one stop free online service that helps you easily plan, schedule, and manage all the things busy families do. I want a web based service that I can access anywhere and not something that I have to download.

I have looked at several sites but I didn't like it for one reason or another:

Famster (too complicated and fancy)

Cozi (the closest one to what I want but there seems to be no proper reminder system and the web version is not good enough)

Airset (too complicated and not user friendly)

Famundo (I like it but you have to pay for it)

Cingo (you have to pay for it, and I don't need a portal type site)

If need be, I'll pay for something but not without knowing there are NO good alternatives out there.

Yahoo calendar is the best online reminders, and free, but i'm not familiar with these kind of internet reminders, i like Jingle, Rockrose Jingle, a desktop reminder ...

Can you put a price on Social Networking?
i don't believe that it is right to put any sort of a price on social networking although i am surprised they haven't yet especially messenger but there would always be free one out there
Reply:Sure you can but it depends on the individual if they would pay for such a service. Odds are that just allowing a user to track their friends would not be enough to draw in people. You would have to offer special contact opportunities. Although anyone can keep up with their own contacts making contacts can be invaluable. Another thought you should have is before you can charge for your service you must first get a broad enough network that individual would feel that your service provides them the the contacts they need. Why would I sign up for something and pay for it if no one I am interested in keeping up with is signed up.

Personally I don't like social site because it is just something else I have to keep up with. If I thought is could replace another social contact method or make me additional contacts I suppose maybe but I can also do this for free so why would I pay.
Reply:I think this has been common knowledge in America for a long time that people will pay for friends. It's called "fraternities" and "sororities", and they pay thousands of dollars a year for their social networking.

I personally will not pay a dime for anything having to do with online networking, but anytime you pay a cover charge at a club or bar, you are paying for social networking (usually between $5 and $10 dollars in Louisiana where I live).

Should sex offenders be banned from social networking websites?

In Indiana there is a law that is trying to be passed that bans registered sex offenders from visiting social networking sites. I was wondering if this law would be unconstitutional.

Should sex offenders be banned from social networking websites?
No, I don't think that it would be cruel %26amp; unusual punishment, so not unconstitutional. They are a danger to others so, why should they be allowed to trap the young %26amp; unwary as many have done in the past. My problem is how the heck are they going to keep them from doing it! People can access the internet anonymously, how could you catch them!
Reply:Yes, they should be banned from social networking websites. And no its not unconstitutional. You lose your constitutional rights when you commit a felony, including the right to vote.
Reply:What would happen if you had the same name as a sex offender? How about someone with a more minor offense that mended their ways?
Reply:No, wouldn't be any fun without you here.
Reply:Whether it is or not it would be near impossible to Police or enforce.
Reply:No, that would be a good law.
Reply:It might be unconstitutional if the social networking site opposed it, but I don't see why they would do that. But in either case, it would be virtually impossible to enforce such a law.
Reply:actually, felons do not lose all of their constitutional rights, they are afforded rights to due proccess, to all of the first amendment provisions, they are afforded all rights except the right to own and purchase and possess a firearm, and the right to vote.

Who wants to help create a social networking site?

Hi everyone, I have been thinking about this long and hard and I have decided I would like to create a Social Networking Site, but I don't know where to start. I have the code and the files, but I don't know how to apply them and get the website to work. If anyone knows how, I would love to make this site a partnership and we will manage the site 50/50. All you have to do is help get the site up and running and then we will be the owners and hopefully it will grow. And, at first I would prefer a free web host until the site is getting really busy, then we can upgrade if we need to. Let me know if you are interested, I need someone with PHP experience and all of the code you need for these types of sites. Thanks.

How did teens engage in social networking in the 1980s?

also how did they engage in social networking in industrial revolution and hunter-gatherer societies?

How did teens engage in social networking in the 1980s?
In the 1980s before cell phones, texting, email, it was the telephone. Many families had a second line installed for the heavy use given by their teens.

In the Industrial Revolution, except in the lowest classes all social networking for teens would have been indirect, i.e. via parents, church organizations, chaperones, and following strict protocols of speech and behavior.

Hunter-gatherers would all have been mated (married) by teen years.

What is the most popular social networking website in Malaysia to be part of ?

There are many social networking websites, i.e. Facebook, Friendster, Myspace, its just that am wondering which one serves you the best and why?

What is the most popular social networking website in Malaysia to be part of ?
Myspace is better than the rest you mentioned. It's fast and user friendly. You can also find a lot of Malaysians there.

There's also one website made by Malaysian, but it is in Malay language, called Myrakan.com.

What is the draw of social networking sites?

With the growing popularity of social networking sites like Facebook and Myspace, there is obviously a desire to connect in a digital format. But what, if anything, is the real desire when logging in. Are we simply seeking to make conncections in a void of internet junk? Are we trying to make our mark on the world in our own way? And if we so often represent ourselves in such an inauthentic way, by using stats, quizzes, photoshopped images of ourselves, why is it so popular?

What is the draw of social networking sites?
For me, it's just a fun way to stay connected to friends that live far away or I just don't see too often. I'm very conscience to not post something on my myspace profile (or facebook or xanga or yahoo {yes, I have one of each}) that mis-represents me in anyway. After all, I'm using the thing to communicate with people who already know me, not to attract new friends. If I posted a bunch of crap, people would know I was lying about it.
Reply:We are creating a perspective of ourselves that we have total control over and are able to spend as much time planning and executing, unlike in the real world where we have to make decisions on a dime.

On one's facebook or myspace they put out material that they hope will be viewed by others in order to portray certain qualities about themselves. It is almost like "THIS IS ME... UNDERNEATH IT ALL."

Is there room for another social networking site?

I have a friend who is spending a fortune develop a new social networking site. He's attitude is there is always room in the market but I'm not so sure? I know people want something new and sometimes some of the sites becuase they are so big not don' really have that personal touch. You know that saying 15mins of fame or 1 gig of privacy?...Your thoughts are welcome :-)

Is there room for another social networking site?
Nope. New social networking sites have done their "3 months" are now suffering at staggering money losses (server costs, traffic, bandwidth, no advertisments to offset costs)

these type of things are "fads" and as with every fad, they are good for a short time and fade away. Unless you have a major media advertising back up (ie myspace is owned by Fox) he will be SOL.
Reply:I would say yes and no.

If he has a new spin on it, yes. For example supporttube.com is a new spin on youtube.com.
Reply:Of course there's room, it would need something original going for it to make it stand out and last.
Reply:sure theres room, as long as it offers something new and is done well.

im not a big fan of myspace, it seems full of goths to me. i would join one where rock music was not allowed.... but thats just me bieng fussy.

Help installing a php mysql social networking script?

I recently purchased a PHP social networking script off of Ebay. It requires use of MYSQL.

The instructions for installation aren't too good. I've installed simple SNS scripts before, and have created mysql databases before so I know how to do that.

I'm wondering if I could send this script to someone in .zip format, and if they could write a better set of installation instructions for me. The zip file is under 7mb.

The seller made it sound like installation would just require me to upload the files to my webspace, run a simple point and click installer.and wah lah..it would be done. Needless to say it's not that easy. Feel free to contact me on messenger.

My husband is really into social networking sites...?

He has pages on myspace, facebook, facebox, tagged, Hi5, ringo, and amigos.com, he spends a LOT of time looking at pictures of other people. Some are just random people but most of the pictures are really pretty 18-yr old girls posing coquettishly for the camera. Also he emails them, leaves messages on their blogs, is in chatrooms, and they IM each other. Keep in mind these are girls he has never met in real life and says he has no intention of ever meeting, they are just "online friends". I am just horribly jealous, I don't know what to think he insists it's just a way to pass the time and kill boredom. He has been working sporadically, he will work a few days then have a few days off. On his days off, I find out that he just surfs these "social networking" sites all day instead of doing something productive like small repairs around the house or helping me with the household chores. What do you think, am I overreacting? is it just a harmless male thing or is it infidelity?

My husband is really into social networking sites...?
What your husband is doing is sick. Yes it is infidelity. I say, kick him out. How do you know he never meets them? On line friends my you know what. If my husband did that, I would be at the lumber yard looking for a two by four to bust over his head (don't do this) and would then call the cops on him (how does he know the girls are 18) and then take him for every dime he had. This is "fun"? How old is this guy? If he wants to kill boredom he can help you around the house, play golf, get involved in a community service group, there are tons of things. This is just too wierd. I would lose any interest in a guy that did this. Ask his Mom if she thinks it is infedelity. If he gets angry that you did, then you know he knows it is wrong. If he doesn't know it is wrong then something is wrong with him, if he knows it is wrong and does it anyway, he is what is known as a sociopath.
Reply:Yes you are its all fun so give the guy a break.
Reply:You are not overreacting. Your marriage has some issues (no offense, all marriages do).

I would suggest marriage counseling. Not all counselors are good. If you go to one and you think they might be bad, then they probably are.

There are plenty of more healthy ways for your husband to cure his boredom. How about you two do some new hobbies together? Good luck. It isn't the end of the world or your marriage.

But, if he is not receptive to changing this habit, you have some choices to make.
Reply:It is a problem that is becoming rampant these days and has caused much hurt among spouses.

In this case, he is not yet addicted but definitely there are seeds to addiction. For the moment they are just probably meeting a "need" like he says, it's boredom. Or perhaps, it is more than that. But fantasies on the net is not easy for you to compete with.

It is probably time that you have an honest talk with him. At the same time, explore with him the possibility of other activities you can both do together so he is less "bored".

In case you find he is also into porn, there is a good book you can read. "End Porn Addiction"
Reply:...it's harmless. If you want to him to know it bothers you, just do the same %26amp; make him jealous.......you can start by emailing me...lol...!! ..(seriously, you can email me anytime)... - Bruce
Reply:If you feel that your marriage is in jeopardy because of his actions, you need to tell him how you feel. Come right and tell him how you feel and that you wish he would stop. Sometimes I don't think men take our "subtle" hints of us wanting them NOT to do something. IF he continues to do this, ask for marriage counseling. I am also an avid Myspace %26amp; Myyearbook person - and I am in a longterm relationship...but I do post that I am in a relationship and only looking for friendship and pen pals. Does he state that he is single? IF so, that is a red alert that something needs to be done. If not, he could just be harmlessly "flirting" with others - knowing that they are "unobtainable".. Maybe just a fantasy! Let me know how it affects you! Hang in there!
Reply:I use to think that it was all innocent, no big deal, it's just a computer. Until the nights got longer the time we spent together shorter. Then one day I was looking for a sight that I was on something to do with my kids and boom. Somehow a conversation that he had with a women was saved. Now he could have intentionally done that. Who knows. In my case it was more than just casual conversation. Just be careful and keep your guard up. We are divorced now and he is with the girl from the Internet. Good luck. Please don't let this scare you. I don't know what kind of relationship y'all have. I just know the Internet can be a really good thing and a really bad one. Take care and good luck to you. I wish you the best.
Reply:Ewww, not cool. You are not overreacting. Boredom can be the Devil's playground, so he needs to find a new hobby. This is something you definitely should address. Anything that your husband is doing that could affect your relationship in a negative way should be avoided at all costs. Good for you for recognizing that this is a problem, and for wanting to do something about it. Stick to your guns girl!
Reply:Get rid of him, he is a pig!
Reply:I don't think I would like it if my husband was emailing 18 year old girls. And if he is just bored and looking for friends, why not chat with guys as well? Some questions to ponder and I would continue to talk to him about it. It just doesn't make sense to me at all.
Reply:something he enjoys to do with his time. a way to get away from society temporarly and relax. have a good time.
Reply:I don't think your overreacting at all. I would be very upset if it were my husband doing this. Have you tried to ask him why he feels the need to look for these other women to socialize with? That might be a good place to start. Good Luck to you. I hope everything works out OK!

UK Government Plans To Monitor Social Networking Sites And Forums...?

There was a small piece in today's Metro or London Lite (not sure which) about Government plans to set up a new department which will be tasked specifically with monitoring internet websites such as Facebook and other social networking sites (this one will probably be included) in order to 'ascertain what people are saying' and to adjust policy accordingly. Can anyone find me a link? And, do you think this is a good idea, or another sinister move? Would you feel comfortable giving your honest views on Government if you knew the Government where actually reading them and compiling data based on your views?

UK Government Plans To Monitor Social Networking Sites And Forums...?
They are running out of ideas on how to snoop on us, and control us yet more. This government has done more to bring in a `Big Brother` State than anyone....and they haven`t finished yet by a long way.
Reply:Dictatorship, not Democracy rules the UK. Fascism at it's greatest under Herr Brown.
Reply:April Fools has gone surely..
Reply:At least they would be listening. I know some one who has a Facebook for their Cat though, so they may be thrown off course a tad if they rely on all they read.

What a great Government Job, getting to hang out on Facebook and not getting the sack for wasting the firms time. I shall be checking the job section and applying for a Job on that task force.
Reply:If it could change things for the better it is a good thing, but somehow I don't believe the information they would get would be used for purposes of improving the lives of the people in the UK.
Reply:Its media lies, believe me if this was gonna happen itd be over the proper papers (i.e. guardian, independent)
Reply:Do you think this has started just now what you like, what's happened now is it legal to monitor social movement eg; internet, phone, etc.

So now you can be taken to court, where before you could not be taken to court under privy laws, can you not see that you are losing all your rights.
Reply:Another example of Bushit/Blair totalitarianism,a bad idea
Reply:It really wouldn't bother me if they did or not.
Reply:Policy will not be adjusted according to what we say. What made you say that?

Would I feel comfortable?

There is a standing invitation for any of my representatives to come by my house anytime to here my views.

I doubt anyone will show up.

Strange bars is an exclusive one of its own social networking site for drunks, where your mission is to hang out with drunks. I think someone is trying to reform these guys or maybe show them when they are in they senses how they look, where they go or how they behave. Anyway the creators deserve to be patted on their backs for this good cause. Now I think drunks will hang out more at this site than at the bars.

Is it reasonable to filter social networking websites like Friendster and Myspace in universities?

I am a student of the University of the Philippines - Visayas, a constituent university of the University of the Philippines System. The administration is planning to filter such sites. We have a debate activity in one of our classes and I was assigned in the affirmative side. The resolution is: The University of the Philippines administration should ban and filter social networking sites in all its campuses. I am hoping someone could help me defend this resolution.

The use of those websites is taking away bandwidth on their network

Why do you think ONLINE SOCIAL NETWORKING WEBSITES are a trend today?

Why do you think Online Social Networking sites are such a big trend today? (sites like MySpace, Facebook, Friendster, Xanga, and LiveJournal)

Why do you think ONLINE SOCIAL NETWORKING WEBSITES are a trend today?
Because more and more people are starting to connect to the internet from home. It's a good way to keep in touch with friends and family. More and more people sit in front of computers everyday, looking to be entertained. Social networks provide a comfortable entertaining atmosphere that you can access just about anytime that you are at home as long as you have an internet connection. And than you can connect from other places, check your mail on there, meet new people, learn new things, observe media, and lots of other things that are entertaining.
Reply:Because people want to connect with other people, which makes them feel important. It's also a VERY convenient way to keep in touch with everyone without having to spend a lot of time or energy. I think another reason is because we as individuals want to be noticed. Doing blogs, social networks, and other sharing websites allows us to do that.

Do you see yourself using social networking sites 5 years from now?

yea i use them to keep in touch with all my friends that moved away after graduation and plus i like facebook b/c i dont bring my camera anywhere and so its cool to have other people make an album for u
Reply:No, I do not think so.
Reply:I'm not using them now, so my best answer would have to be, "I don't know". I just know that at this point in time, I don't have a really favorable opinion of them, but opinions can change, so who knows.
Reply:doubt any of the ones i use now wil be popular in 5 years , look at how fast the internet changes and it seems like every generation of teens has there own website , mean 5 years ago it was ICQ , then MSN had a few good years , then MYSPACE was big , then facebook suddenly appeared and went huge .

not sure whats next but if i log into ones i use now in 5 years i'd be seeing profiles of people i knew 5 years ago and likely hadn't been updated in years . so there would be little point anyways . unless i cared to see what largely random people i knew 5 years ago were doing.
Reply:I prefer bars.
Reply:I could see myself using social networking sites. As to which one, that's another story.

Does anyone even remember Friendster? haa haa...

It really depends on what the networking is for. The way I see it is that you can add a bunch more stuff w/ MS, but FB is more catered toward professional / educational-type networking.
Reply:Well I don't even use them now so as for 5 years from now..... Sure why not ;)

i have no friends on howyoulivingonline because... nobody else even knows it exists!!

the last part kinda is the biggie - you need a lot of press about new social network sites because everyone's already established. After all, myyearbook, yuwie, xanga, facebook, myspace, and so many more exist - why would people sign up for a new one unless its 100% innovative and their friends are already on it?
Reply:Dont even try to compete with facebook.
Reply:i think a different name might help, i don't really like the one you have. it doens't roll of the tongue like facebook.

Are u part of a social networking site?
Hey

I'm only affiliated with myspace but I went to your site and it says the survey no longer exists

Good luck anyway
Reply:I'm a part of about 5 social networks. I add them all into my OtherEgo.com account so people can see everything from one location.
Reply:tag world, yahoo 360, my space.
Reply:Hi! no, I am not into networking. But your best bet would be to go to My Space.com, or put your question "Networking" in your browser it will direct you to hundreds of sites. Good luck.

Do you think there is profit potential for niche market social networking websites?

Most large social networking sites (myspace, friendster) are designed for anyone, but do you think there is still potential for profit for new and upcoming niche market social networking sites? Social networking sites dedicated to one genre of people such as music, dancing, actors, etc.

Do you think there is profit potential for niche market social networking websites?
At least one new player is trying it. Be Seen Cafe just launched a few days ago. They offer many of the services offered by MySpace but with a more adult tone. This one has some free usage area but many features have a small fee. As people in your personal network purchase advanced features - You get paid. How cool is that! See it at http://www.beseencafe.net/viabruce
Reply:i dont know but i heard myspace is estimated to be worth 15-20 billion dollars
Reply:It depends on how much services you can provide. How many sponsors can you get for your site. My sites are sponsored by advertisements and so is myspace. The most simple with no outlay method is to create your own websites or blogs @ blogger.com and put up your products' photos and services if you have any. If you can create websites or blogs and can type, you can make online money online easily. You may make money by publishing Google Adsense on your websites. If you have a website or a web-blog, you could make money by publishing advertisements on your site (by google). If someone clicks on those ads, you will earn money. If you don't have a website, you may start creating web-blogs like blogger.com (mostly free) with advertisements (google ads) on it. Some free websites don't allow you to publish google adsense because they are doing it themself.

What do you think of a social networking site that only utilizes a person's picture with no other information.

I am looking for people's opinions. I have friends who have created a social networking site called At First Pic. People provide their pix with no other information. THey would like me to invest and be a partner. DO you believe this idea is safer, as it provides less details than other dating sites and that is also more intriguing and mysterious. Other friends I have asked are mixed or do not have any opinions. There are a lot of social sites; Yahoo Personals, e-harmony, etc. How does this idea sound to you?

I prefer the smaller dating sites and the niche sites. I recommend trying

My space and other social networking?

Am I the only one that hates social networking, i mean the only people that do it are people that have no friends and need some perverted old man to comfort them.

I was on myspace until about a month ago when i realised, the time i have been spending on myspace could have been spent going out and meeting real people. I now am 5 more good friends the wiser since leaving myspace.

My space and other social networking?
Well I use it

not to meet new people

but to keep in contact with my other friends..

I dont want to lose touch with them, and I know they check their profiles often.
Reply:I got Myspace to keep in touch with a friend in Alaska. I haven't seen him in about 8 years. I hate Myspace but keep my account open to talk to him.
Reply:I too use social networking online to keep in touch with my friends and family. I rarely look online to meet new people. If they are a friend of a friend, I might be inclined to message them. It is sad to know that there are many who use social networking to find and harass others just for their own entertainment
Reply:Most people use Facebook or Myspace to keep in touch with friends they ALREADY have but I guess you were using to find friends.
Reply:You must of been using social networking to look for friends you dont know and got tired of it. But i used myspace and facebook to stay in touche with friends and family back home. I don't try to look for people to be friends with. I just stay in touch with people I already know.

What is the best social networking site?

I use facebook and tried bahu but those are ok. I want to use a really awesome social networking site plz recommend ur favorites!

What is the best social networking site?
MySpace, Bebo and Facebook being the most widely used in the anglosphere (North America, England, and so on), Google’s Orkut, third-string in the U.S. but dominant in countries like Brazil and India, and Friendster being the most widely used in Asia. Facebook might be the most immensely popular social networking service today.

How is their performance? Recent research show that Facebook has the bad performance.

What's the best social networking site?

I'm finally jumping on the bandwagon and getting ready to join a social networking site. Between Facebook, Myspace, and everything else, it's hard to choose.

What do you think is the best site? I a place that's fun and entertaining. Plus, I want to try to get my friends to join me and connect, so I'm looking for one that might appeal to a bit group of people.

What's the best social networking site?
Well a lot of it depends on what your personal preferences are; MySpace.com allows a lot more customisation on their pages (such as using HTML and CSS) as well as adding music to backgrounds, wallpaper, etc...

It is exactly this reason why MySpace has been often criticised. Also, I've seen a lot more so-called "hacks" for MySpace then for Facebook, because MySpace has very large networks, as opposed to Facebook's multiple networks.

Facebook is simple; it doesn't allow any customisation. That way more adults prefer Facebook due to its simplicity rather than a "noisy and eyesore" MySpace. Facebook also has application one can use, although a profile page with too many clutter apps can be frowned upon.

It all comes to a matter of what you prefer. There are other sites (Xanga, Bebo, etc...) too.

Personally, I prefer Facebook, but I don't have anything against MySpace either.

Hope that helps somewhat.

I am creating a social networking website.. Do I have to patent my idea to keep it protected?

Dear Yahoo! Members,

My partner's and I have recently invested in a server, and are creating a small, but unique social networking idea that will be initially a local system for local members of nearby schools.

Furthermore, in the short future, once the site is online and up, I intend to create a Business Plan and look for angel investors.

I was wondering, since everything will be going public and everything will be revealed in a business plan, is it normal for people to patent such ideas before anything is public or has been presented? Or is it impossible to patent the features of a website?

If this is all possbible, do any of you have any idea of the realistic price I would be paying, and how long the approval turnaround is for such a thing?

Please share your thoughts, and ideas, as I would love to understand and execute this properly.

Looking for your guidance.

P.S. Not sure if this matters, but I am based in Canada, and not the USA.

I am creating a social networking website.. Do I have to patent my idea to keep it protected?
You can protect the technology using a javascript called no right click. This will block anyone from seeing the coding that makes the site work. Aside form that you are protected by installing the statement at the bottom of evey page:

Copyright © 2006 Your Comany all rights reserved.

This is a legal copyright world wide protection for electronic media. Hope this helps
Reply:Another way of helping to secure the site is by using the URL block script. As well, using CSS+PHP you can hide the main stuff in coded blocks that others can never see.For an example of the URL block, I use it on my site listed in my signature above. Good luck. Report It

Should I start a social networking website?

I know it sounds cool to start a social networking website, but with all the competition such as myspace,hi5 and bebo. Is it even worth it?

Should I start a social networking website?
The popularity of ur site depends on the facilities that u provide in ur site to connect people. If u can provide soemthing that is not there in orkut,hi5 etc may be ur site would be the talk of the town. its a good way of not only making money but also fame. all the best dude.

How much do you consider about credibility, what that means to you? What are main factors for you when you are wondering how credible is a member?

I would be also pleased if anybody know for any article regarding credibility on social networking sites.

tnx

Credibility of members on social networking sites. How much do you consider that?
This might not help you too much, but I only use social networking sites (both facebook and myspace) to keep in touch with people I've met. Most of my friends are from college but its always exciting to find and reconnect with friends from high school and earlier too. Because I use these sites to connect with friends, I believe the members I connect with are 100% credible. I've met them and know them, and they aren't trying to sell me on something.

Which is a good social networking site for a person trying to get into finance career?

My boyfriend is a Ph.D in physics but wishes to take up finance as a career as a next step. He is working but also looking for courses that can help him enter finance related jobs. Can social networking sites like linkedin help? He needs some sound guidance and needs to build up some contacts to help him. Thanks

Which is a good social networking site for a person trying to get into finance career?
Linked in can really help. He can also dip his toes into the water by going through temp agencies like Robert Half Accounting or Account Temps to try out different types of finance jobs and get PAID before he picks out a new career.

Also, his college where he got his Ph.D., even if it was years ago, will usually be thrilled to help an alumni change career directions (they someday hope he'll donate money once he's successful), and they can possibly get him into the annual on campus job fairs. They will definitely have lots of job connections.
Reply:LinkedIn and I can introduce you to some Players on it.

What attracts you to social networking sites and what features are still missing?

What motivates and attracts you most in social networking sites?

What kind of technological features are still missing?

What attracts you to social networking sites and what features are still missing?
You need to be unique or you are "just another one of those network sites".

Most people are attracted to a social networking site by referral from a friend, or they are looking for someone who hasn't been heard from. Social sites are not new so if someone invites me to a new one I usually just reply with the URL of my old one, without even visiting the site.

There is seldom anything unique or even different. If it requires a long registration then forget it. For security though, I do like the practice of some sites requiring that everyone phone or SMS a message in. Non-verified people should be restricted, but allowed to see how the site works. I also like the old Tribal Voice program where you could absolutely suspend, and ban Spammers and Stalkers.

More features are still missing, than exist today. What has been added in the last 10 years? Honestly, look at what the old Firefly network offered back in the early 1990's. You could use html tags, chat worked in a browser, and all private messages were saved in an archive, so you had an option to save on the web or to your desktop. Even the avatars that Yahoo are using now were already available 10 years ago.

Single people want to see actual, recent, photographs though. In the singles market you only need to market to the females, as the males will follow.

I am sure that you will get a lot of good suggestions here, but if you really don't know how much of a market you are missing here then I am not going to tell you for free.

Just look at the success or failures of such sites as:

myspace.com

classmates.com

friendster.com

tickle.com

belief.net

sherdog.com

ancestry.com

match.com

lonelyplanet.com

--and then get back to us about how your service is going to be any different and why it is even worth taking the time to fill out yet another registration, learn a new system, etc. The desire for social networking online is fast declining due to trolling, stalkers, and misrepresentation. Anyone who is going to operate this type of business better take a serious interest in security.

I am a businessman and an artist who would love to connect with other people who are genuinely looking to work on projects together. We used to do this 15 years ago and because so many qualified people were able to contribute, we could complete a 6 month project in 2-3 days. I would be interested in a site that could just use a solid verification process, and even a live customer support department with a feedback meter like they use on EBay. Security is the main deterrent to the explosion of E-commerce. I would even be interested in paying for such a service after a trial period to see if it was what it promised. We have learned to believe very little of what we read on the Internet.

We use the Internet as a tool for communication but we do not allow anyone who we haven't met into our circles. We did 15 years ago when most people had their name, address, and phone number on their page or profile. That was safe at that time. Now it isn't.
Reply:After reviewing all the answers the consensus seems to be that the most important issues in a Social Networking Site are: functionality, security, and progressive improvements that adjust to the wants and needs of the members. Report It

Reply:The topics are what attracts me. That and if my friends are logged on to that site.
Reply:I wish facebook had real IM'ing to keep connected to my friends in one site rather than having to open messenger and facebook at the same time.
Reply:for me it is away to keep intouch with freinds and family when because i am alwayse so far away from home i am military and life half way around the world plus i have found some new and old freinds i dont make freinds to easily and places like myspace help me alot
Reply:I want to see a place like Yahoo Answers, but one where you can play Avatar Games and chat with each other.
Reply:myspace is good..

BUT SOMETIMES THE PROGRAMERS SUCK!
Reply:I am attracted to the sites because they are an excellent way to keep in touch with friends who live far away. After college, I moved to a different town 2 hours away, and sites like myspace and facebook have helped me keep in touch with the friends I made in college.

I wish myspace could get rid of all the spammers, if they could come up with some kind of feature to automatically detect who was collecting people's passwords and delete their accounts, that would be great!! I get tired of always having to change my password because of spammers!
Reply:um what attracts..pretty much all the things on myspace...a profile that you can express who you are, pictures of yourself, songs, comments, messaging, instant messaging, and all that stuff.

stuff that needs work or i hate...is tops, i hate them because people fight over whos where on your top and I hate bullitens I mean there cool and everything but some of the things people post is wierd...What needs to change is your privacy and safety..youll get freind requests from people you dont even know and safety because alot of people put pics of them naked or in there underwear or something..
Reply:Not me, not into that...just like to yap in here...LOL
Reply:I like Social Networking sites because they give you the ability to stay in touch with anyone in the world on 1 website. I would like to see these sites give their users a blank customizable web page.
Reply:Well they all have something that's keep coming back. I love the way Face Book has security features for a user to use in order to protect their account. My Space is a little too open to viruses and other unwanted attacks. Face Book is now starting to get on the ball with the profile customization game. Something MySpace and BlackPlanet has done pretty much it seems like since the beginning. Overall, I like all three, but I had to get rid of Black Planet due to personal issues, I don't use My Space because all my friends on there use Face Book or Yahoo and it's makes no sense to log into three or four different accounts to talk to the same people. Face Book is getting better, but it's starting to allow too much which in turn will eventually make it into something like MySpace.
Reply:Many of them are missing standards compliant code with good id/class attributes to hook the CSS onto.
Reply:i used to love myspace but for the past 8 months or so i've been HOOKED on facebook.. honestly, im a rat. and i know that everyone else out there is too :p by that, i mean be nosey and see whats going on in my friends lives .. like wall to walls on facebook, or seeing who theyve added etc. ahha i know it sound s stupid but ratting is pretty addictive .. and its not creepy because EVERYONE does it / its not on random people, its your friends haha.

anyway, go to facebook and you'll see the jist of it
Reply:What attracts me initially is that it will be way easier to connect to all my friends. Like on Facebook, it's easy to see what all your friends are doing and get updates. It's easier to plan stuff with them that way too. The more interactive the better. I'm also interested in getting to know people with the same interests as me. Its easy to find them on a social networking group.

The features that are missing are SAFETY features and CHOICES, which is why I'm not on any social networking site. I personally find it creepy that Facebook doesn't let you delete your own account or that Myspace is a sexual predator's dream come true.
Reply:Social Networking SItes are good places to keep in touch with Friends ;especially those whom we don't normally meet for days or even months. These sites also provide a forum to discuss or ask a number of topics ranging from Sports,Languages to Science %26amp; technology or even Politics and News.Yahoo Answers and Mylot.com fall in this category. Then there is Myspace.com where one can check out on a number of Albums or Videos .

Orkut and like forums provide Instant Communication with Friends (both Real and Online.) .

The features which I like these sites to add are :

1) Provide a user the facility of restricting the number of people who can send a Friend Request because as of now we receive too many friends' requests on these forums.

2) More security - I have heard tales of Individual Pictures being misused. That is why people are afraid of putting their own pictures many times .
Reply:It's an excuse to post up a photo of yourself in a way that doesn't seem overly self-centered.

I like the idea of something meant solely to increase a person's amount of socializing...

What I think they could use is more music... LOL.
Reply:Real life? Idiot.
Reply:what attracts me to social networking sites is it is another way to stay in touch with friends and family. they offer a way to meet people and find out information. what better way to find out about a company or location than to ask someone who works or lives there.

if two sites are similar i would choose the place that has similar values and goals to my own. if i want to stay in touch with certain friends and they are only on one website then i might consider joining that one. whereas if i want to meet people then i am more willing to try a site my friends are not on.

there need to be better safeguards for privacy and safety. some information in someone's profile would be difficult to confirm but other things would not be as hard. in addition, some information is not as relevant and does not matter as much if a person exagerates to make themselves sound better. age is a key area minors are often able to get into content that may be age inappropriate. they can put themselves at risk for being targeted. granted parents need to know what their children are doing, but many sites have insufficient safegards to keep children safe. even adults are not always safe because social networking sites do not use the available technology and try to make safety a priority.

profiles can be personalized, but only to an extent. some questions only allow for certain answers but do not allow people to type their own more appropriate answer or skip the question.

most sites allow you to personalize your profile, send email, chat, send instant messages, save profiles/ make a list of friends. sites that do not have all the "usual" features would benefit from adding them.
Reply:Yahoo Answers is pretty good. Myspace is my favorite but like everyone is saying it has become over-run by trolls, weirdos, and spammers.

If you are talking about personal sites for singles, then I am not interested. I already have friends and don't have a problem getting dates. If you are talking about interactive sites like this one then thats ok. Just figure out how to limit one account per person.

Most of us are also turned off by Top Contributors and Top Ten list. It only makes the trolling and cheating worse. That is why I don't stay active on these sites. I just don't have time for the crap.
Reply:i want help of poor %26amp; i want leran abut sciences
Reply:I like meeting new people. I love Myspace. You meet new people. You can add your favorite songs, customize your profile, and just describe what you like, what you don't like. I hate it when people send chain letters though. They're everywhere like Youtube, Myspace, Yahoo Answers sometimes, and just everywhere!
Reply:I like using them because I can keep up with friends (as long as they keep their profiles up to date). It's also a good way to catch up with people I haven't talked to in awhile and keep up with bands I like (on Myspace). I like on Facebook that they tell you whose profiles have recently been updated so you know whose to look at if you want the latest news. I also like the applications that Facebook added. It's more stuff to keep you amused and keep you coming back. I like Myspace's customization options better since you can do all sorts of things to your page layout that you cannot do on Facebook.
Reply:The fact that I can link up with my friends without the hassles of email or phone calls.

We need more technology guarding against child predators. The last thing I need is my son to get buttraped by a gay pedophile.
Reply:What's missing is the social site that isn't harvesting your information to sell to advertisers. They should just charge to be on there, and have no ads whatsoever. If you can't support the site without selling out, then it's really not geared towards the users, but towards the advertisers as the revenue stream. The users' requests and needs end up taking a back seat to whomever advertiser is paying the most. Facebook has a clean interface but it still sells you out with saturated product placements/advertisements.
Reply:A critical mass of people I know combined with some unique features would pull me towards a new site. I currently use orkut and see no complling reason to migrate out of it, since all my friends are already here.
Reply:I wonder if we have enough local online groups to make local friends that we might actually spend face to face time with? If we had local online would we say all the things we say if we think they are total strangers and we might never see them again if we didn't mean what we said or we didn't like them?

I think that everyone is so busy, and the mass has people connected for reasons that keep them in and out of certain groups in many cases so it is the same old same old. So this keeps us engaged in mental activity and disengaged in physical activities, but I wonder if that is best or even good for us in some ways?

I get bored and wonder if others get bored as well, and yet I always seem to come back? I don't have the latest in technology so can't get into everyone of the latest sites, I think there are some that might be pretty good that I can't even reach.

Do we all actually realize that there are people on the other side of the screens typing in what is in their minds, it is not just a keyboard and a screen, these people have thoughts, emotions, needs, and wants too and they may be very different then they let on like and / or different then our own. Who helps them to get their real needs met if this is just computers and not hard bodies? It is confusing at points.

How are we going to make it work for all of us and if we spend to much time then they say something is wrong with that and if not enough something is wrong with that, let me ask who makes the determination for others what is enough or what is too much and why? Who has the right to do that?
Reply:the best thing about the networking sites are the ability to meet old/ longlost friends.
Reply:I agree with the first post you got. Too much HTML gives really long, annoying load times from people who don't realize how annoying it is to wait for them to load all their dumb videos. Facebook has done a good job stopping that, and the adds. I just wish they didn't give you all those updates about what your friends were doing. It's kind of creepy.
Reply:If I were college age, I certainly would have both myspace and facebook; but now, I am way too busy for that. I will be putting up advertising sites for my videos and other stuff, but that's just to get 'presence' and not really go into it on a daily basis.

Technologically missing? It's too easy for abusers, flamers, and other obnoxious unfriendly people to get on the sites (including Yahoo! Answers). You can delete and block but they just come back under another name...

Too bad there isn't an Internet etiquette course you need to pass (and I don't mean just agreeing to the "Terms and Conditions"). Once you pass the course, you get an assigned ID which can only be associated with one e-mail. That should bring civility back...

Mind you, I am not against well thought out arguments. I am against people who resort to name calling and or other put-downs as opposed to giving a succinct argument with data backing up any claims and counter-claims.
Reply:The best thing about social networking sites is the ability to re-connect with old friends while meeting new ones. It's also a good way to find out about people that you are newly aquitanited with.

The most important technological feature that is missing is the quality control of these sites. There is way too much spammers and fakers on these sites. If only there were a way to limit one account per person... but that'd be too costly.
Reply:I like the ones that give you a chance to rate pictures and profiles. When you do you can earn points toward prizes. I don't like a boring site.
