Social Networking for Nerd/Geek?

Well, lately I've taken a rather different turn at work, and started listening to people in a social way (ie conversation not about work itself). It seems that a few of the young bloods are into this MySpace thing (I know what it is, I just hate it enough to pretend it needs to be "loaded on a dump truck and shipped through an endless series of tubes").

Anyway, I was just wondering if there's a technically-oriented social networking site for nerds/geeks or programmers/hackers. Something like MySpace or Beebo, _not_ something like the Trifecta (/., Digg, and ArsTechnica) which only supply information and links (yes, strange coming from me...).

Either that or a good chatroom or something to help increase my "social skills" so that should the opportunity present itself, I may receive a promotion that would factor social skills into the mix.

Social Networking for Nerd/Geek?

Reply:u know earl, i recently graduated and will be teaching high school students this fall. still have myspace and facebook but try not to use either toomuch, i think myspace should just be for pplwho have not reached 20-21 yet. honestly, my friends who talk about myspace on a regular basis are becoming total losers. my best places for meeting ppl are bars, church groups, heck, even chat rooms.

sorry i don't know of any other networks/groups, i just don't think u really need them. i mean, Tuesday i met a group of Australian girls, Friday i met a group of Russians, and the week before my friends and i hooked up with Spaniards and Argentinians(at different bars in sanfrancisco/berkeley area). good luck man, gotta stop now b/c I'm just rambling on and on. oh %26amp; my myspace id isthe same as this one.
Reply:Honestly, try Facebook. It's not a crap hole like MySpace, but a lot of people use it that you would know. The interface is clean and slick, and it's not like those crappy myspace pages where music plays, there are extremely ugly layouts and flashing stuff. Plus, you can embed the Facebook application on Netvibes.com and use the Facebook application on the iPhone (really awesome!). I am a /., Digg, Reddit, Del.icio.us user. IM me on Yahoo if you have any other questions.
Reply:nice try...
